There’s an old saying that goes ‘where there’s muck, there’s brass’. For the benefit of our non-UK readers, that essentially means there’s money to be made doing dirty jobs.

Ted Cain’s working life was spent ‘in the muck’ – he ran his own scrap metal business – and now let’s say, his retirement is comfortable. However, it hasn’t all been plain sailing.

Born and bred in the once industrial north end of Sheffield, he can recall the days before the sprawl of suburbia when ‘the works’ all had areas of waste land behind them. Land on which 13-year-old Ted would track around on his 600cc Panther field bike…
